EMS field technicians are exposed to a wide range of manufacturers of wind turbine technology. In order to maximize their effectiveness, and minimize our customer’s downtime, we provide our technicians with real time support as well as an up to date library of technical information that is accessible on our corporate network servers via the internet. With the advent of remote assistance and virtual private networks, we are also able to link directly to the O&M facilities that we manage as well as small turbine installations in need of support.

The wind turbine control system acts as the brains for all functions required to keep it operating efficiently and safely despite ever-changing weather conditions. EMS designs and assembles turbine controllers with new components from established electrical equipment manufacturers. Modern Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are used to replace older special purpose designed controller boards. This provides for easier program revisions as well as allowing our systems to be adaptable to the specific requirements of each turbine. All EMS custom control systems are designed and assembled in accordance with the UL508 standard for industrial control panels and bear the UL mark. We have also added Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) capability to all PLCs for remote access to turbine telemetry, data logging, troubleshooting, and turbine performance evaluation.

Controllers are particularly vulnerable to failure or obsolescence because of their reliance upon electrical components and delicate wiring systems. Often, the original manufacturers no longer support these older systems so parts become difficult to source, leading to reduced turbine availability and diminishing returns for the turbine owner.

EMS designs and builds custom control systems for various turbines at its UL approved Panel Shop located in Gary, South Dakota. Using Programmable Logic as its platform, the EMS Controller is particularly useful for turbines that were installed during the mid 80’s and early 90’s.
